Penultimate Day - Weymouth is full to the brim with the world's best Olympic sailors, with Olympic medallists and World Champions wherever you look. But past performance is no guarantee to success at the next event and tomorrow, Friday, is the day when the top 10 across the Olympic Class fleets who proceed to the final Medal Race on Saturday will be determined. It has been a gruelling four days of racing so far and there is still another day of battle. With many nations counting Skandia Sail for Gold as part of the team selection for the 2012 Olympics, the pressure is immense. So far across the 10 Olympic and 3 Paralympic events, Team Great Britain is dominating at the top of three events – Finn, RSX Women and Sonar, Coming a close second is New Zealand who lead in the 470 Women and RSX Men. Web Traffic – has been immense, yet again showcasing the popularity of Skandia Sail for Gold on the ISAF Sailing World Cup tour. Apologies to fans who were unable to get the latest updates earlier in the week, but the internet pipe out of the venue was full to capacity and went into overload causing significant downtime. Olympic fans don't worry, as a brand new fibre optic cable will be in place for 2012. We are currently hitting 60,000 unique users since the start of the event and 150,000 visitors, and with 2,000 pages of content there is plenty to absorb you in all the action here at Weymouth.

Tracking - don't miss a thing by watching the live tracking of races in Weymouth. Thursday showcased the 470 Men and Women, Finn and Star. We have already beaten all records for May, processing 2,000 entries with a third of the month still to go. Controversial Merlin retirement hands winter championship to Peake

Musto Skiff sailor Andy Peake has found himself as the new, unexpected and somewhat reluctant champion of the SailJuice Global Warm-Up 2011. Almost a fortnight since the final event of the UK dinghy winter travellers' series concluded at a windy John Merricks Tiger Trophy at Rutland Water, controversial debate about the legality of their experimental sails has forced the winners, Merlin Rocket sailors Matt Biggs and Ben Hollis, to relinquish the title.

Biggs explained his reasons for retiring in a message to readers of Yachtsandyachting.com, where the debate has been running hot over the rights and wrongs of using experimental sails in the SailJuice series. "After much heartache, and the reading of the comments placed on this website and the Merlin Rocket forums, myself and Ben have decided to duly retire from the event," wrote Biggs. "It was never our intention to gain any illegal advantage, we were just testing the longevity of the newly designed sails not the performance."

Musto Skiff sailor Andrew Peake, now elevated from runner-up to 2011 champion, commented: "Obviously it's always nice to win a competition, but I'd have preferred not to have won it like this. As far as I'm concerned, Matt and Ben won the series fair and square, and it's a shame they've felt compelled to retire from the SailJuice Global Warm-Up. The experimental sails they were using were, for me, a non-issue, and had absolutely no bearing on the outcome of the Series. But I hope they'll come back next year and we can enjoy another round of winter competition on the water without any of the off-the-water politics."

Series organiser, SailJuice.com editor Andy Rice commented: "I feel terribly sorry for Matt and Ben about what's happened. I'm not sufficiently familiar with the minutiae of the Merlin Rocket class rules to understand their error, and maybe they broke the letter of the law, but they certainly didn't break the spirit. I respect their decision, but it wasn't necessary in my view. This doesn't mean I condone willful rule breaking, but what happened here was not a case of that. I set this series up as a bit of fun, and to get people out racing and meeting up with old mates from other classes. Hopefully that's what most people have got out of it this year, and I'm looking forward to sailors enjoying more of the same next winter."

The prizegiving is set to take place at the RYA Volvo Dinghy Show at Alexandra Palace at 1245pm on Saturday, 5 March 2011.

After 13 years of trying, the £1,000 cheque to the first team to win all races at the John Merricks Tiger Trophy has gone to Andy Smith and Tim Needham, who conquered some fierce conditions in their 505 this weekend.

Some competitors were surprised when race officer David Wilkins, an Olympic silver medallist, decided to send sailors out for the three handicap races on Saturday. "David reckons it's only 20 knots," muttered competitors grimly in the changing rooms, looking as though they were about to sent out to almost certain doom.

"It was averaging 18 knots, with some occasional gusts over 25," said Wilkins afterwards, "although most competitors had it at about five knots stronger than that. It could have been the dense cold breeze that you tend to get in the winter, which can make the breeze feel stronger."

While sailors were tipping in left, right and centre across the reservoir, keeping the tireless rescue teams working full bore all afternoon, Smith and Needham sailed majestically around the trapezoid course with seemingly little bother. That said, even Smith admitted to three capsizes during the course of the day. "There was one at the end of the second race near the leeward mark, ended up teabagging Tim and he fell off, another when the spinnaker sheets went under the bow, and another down the run. But I think everyone fell in at some point during the day."

Some ended up beached on the lee shore by the concrete dam, having to leave their boats there until there was time to rescue the equipment later. All in all, a big day.
In the evening there was the customary dinner to celebrate the life of John Merricks, the Olympic silver medallist who learned his trade on Rutland Water and who would have loved the big breeze of this weekend.

The following day dawned even windier, and there was nervous chatter at the prospect of the pursuit race taking place in high wind, with the exception of a few gung-ho competitors such as former OK World Champion Nick Craig. In the end, the race officer decided to call off the racing, although Craig went out anyway and put on a masterclass of survival sailing in his OK while everyone else packed up to go home.

Meanwhile, Smith and Needham were celebrating winning the Tiger Trophy and picking up the £1,000 cheque at a prizegiving in the brand new John Merricks Training Centre. This is a high performance facility funded by Sport England, Rutland SC, the John Merricks Sailing Trust and Tony Everard at Everards Brewery. John's father, Dennis Merricks, and Tony Everard were there to open the new building and to present the prizewinners with their hard-won trophies.

Smith said he'd find something to spend the money on. "There's always something to spend money on with the Five-Oh. Twin poles, I reckon, to make the gybes a bit easier." Not that it looked like they need any help gybing the boat in the strong winds of Saturday. Smith and Needham have also won the opportunity to sail with Team GAC Pindar at the Cowes Week Extreme 40 event as VIP guests.

Runner-up to the 505 was the 420 of Chris Taylor and Caroline Croft who also won the Junior Tiger Trophy, with last year's overall winners, Merlin duo Matt Biggs and Ben Hollis in third. Biggs and Hollis also win the SailJuice Global Warm-Up 2011, the winter travellers series that encompassed four of the major multi-class handicap events and which concluded this weekend at Rutland.

Thanks to Rule 26 for event logistics and site branding, and Everards Brewery for all the prize glasswear and Tiger beer for every entrant.

There's a windy showdown in store for the conclusion of the SailJuice Global Warm-Up 2011, this weekend at the John Merricks Tiger Trophy at Rutland Water.

With warm and wet wind gusting strongly from the south-west, Saturday's three handicap races will provide a muscle-sapping challenge to the competitors in a whole range of dinghy classes. The breeze might drop for Sunday's concluding pursuit race, but there's no doubt the Tiger will be a real test of skill and stamina.

Ian Walker usually likes to attend every Tiger Trophy in memory of his 470 helm, John Merricks, with whom he won an Olympic Silver Medal in Savannah back in 1996. Walker can't be there this weekend as he's in Abu Dhabi working on the build up to his Volvo Ocean Race campaign, which he'll be skippering around the world later this year. But he wished all competitors well. "John would have loved it, particularly if it's a windy one this weekend. Those were his favourite conditions," said Walker. "I'm sure it will be an action-packed weekend and I'll be watching to see who wins."

The prizegiving for this year's event will take place in the new John Merricks Training Centre, a high performance facility funded by Sport England, Rutland SC, the John Merricks Sailing Trust and Tony Everard at Everards Brewery. It will be opened by John's father, Dennis Merricks, and Tony Everard.

Keen to finish up the high rankings this weekend will be the leading contenders in the SailJuice Global Warm-Up. Last year's winners of the Tiger Trophy, Matt Biggs and Ben Hollis, will be hiking hard to keep their Merlin Rocket ahead of Andy Peake's Musto Skiff, who closed the gap on the leading team after last weekend's light-to-medium-air outing in the Steve Nicholson Memorial Trophy.

The points gap between these two leading contenders is negligible, and there are others further down the leaderboard who could yet steal their thunder.

470 Junior World Championships
Held in Doha, Qatar and concluding just before Christmas, SailRacer was pleased to be supporting the 470 Junior World Championships with the event website, including online protest system and SMS mobile messaging. Sail 100 Auto Link Produced - Spring 2007

One of the most significant features of the SailRacer system has been its ability to handle race results in a variety of formats and from different sources.

The SailRacer system allows event organisers to paste their race results (and reports) from different Race Scoring programmes, including Sailwave, Sail 100 and HAL Race Results, also other inputs such as results in Excel spreadsheets, MS Word documents and HTML web pages.

One of the development objectives was to make the link between the Race Programmes and SailRacer as transparent as possible, so I started discussions with the various developers to work out the technological solutions.

RYA see the light - Spring 2007

With all the RYA Youth (Laser, 420, 29er, Hobie) and Junior (Cadet, Mirror, Topper, Optimist) Dinghy Classes covered in the SailRacer Results database, and an extensive archive of data, the RYA were quick to spot the opportunity of tracking our up and coming sailors via SailRacer.

Importantly as the system covers all classes, it is very easy to follow progress of sailors as they progress through the classes.

It soon became clear that the SailRacer system could play an important role in managing results during an event. The opportunity to test this fast became available at the 2007 RYA Youth Nationals, which utilised SailRacer to manage the results.

SailRacer was able to offer the following functions :

From a technical perspective much was learnt from managing the results for 2007 Youth Nationals, it soon became clear that from mid afternoon there was a massive surge in web traffic as people logged onto the site to find the latest results. Routines were put into place to cache results to improve performance.

Once the results handling system I had created for the Mirror Class had been expanded to handle other classes and sailing results submissions from a wide variety of people and formats http://www.sailracer.co.uk/ was ready to go live in Spring 2007.

Search by mixture of above

Analysis tools to allow the comparison of two sailors, showing when they had competed against each other and which had finished ahead, with final counts totaling number of times each sailor had achieved a higher ranking (see screen shot)

A key part of http://www.sailracer.co.uk/ is allow people to post their results in a variety of formats, so far we have seen race results submitted from the following sources :

History

The site in its latest incarnation sprung onto the web in Spring 2007, some will be familiar with the SailRacer name from the magazine of the same title. This was launched and run by my sister Carole Lovesey and partner Rob Andrews a few years ago, as a printed publication lasting a couple of years before they started a family and Rob went to work for the Royal Yachting Association.

I have been the Secretary for the UK Mirror Class Association for a number of years and had developed a web system for managing race results, so when looking for a domain to offer this to a wider audience SailRacer was a natural choice, fortunately Carole and Rob were cooperative.

Managing the results

One of the challenges of running active class association like Mirrors is handling a large volume of results. There are well over a 100 Mirror events each month, these days people expect to see these results published quickly on the web, often on the day of racing.

Adding these to the web was becoming virtually a full time job, so I decided to apply some of my professional skills of developing web sites to come up with a web based solution. This involved designing a database that could store the results, the clever bit being the ability to upload results in different formats from a variety of sources. The system cleverly sorted and formatted the data before importing into the database.

The results could then be viewed on the Mirror website (http://www.ukmirrorsailing.com/) and being in a database easily searched. This delivered added benefits like being able to report on individual sailor performances, great when it was time to select for squads and Teams.

It was clear that over sailing classes would find this type of facility useful, so http://www.sailracer.co.uk/ came to live in 2007
